Toxic microbe found amid mining runoff
Researchers report a new Archaea species Aeroplasma acidarmanus living in Iron Mountain Mine near Redding California. The microbe thrives at pH 0.5 and 115 degrees, producing sulfuric acid that leaches heavy metals and fuels toxic mine runoff. Protective gear was needed during sampling due to caustic water.
