Judge to hear DNA case in Sheppard murder refile

A Cuyahoga Common Pleas judge will hold a May 5 hearing on new DNA findings tied to the 1954 case of Dr. Sam Sheppard in which his defense says an intruder killed Marilyn Sheppard. Sam Reese Sheppard seeks vindication and a $250,000 monetary claim against Ohio plus other losses.

Clinton and Mubarak condemn Israeli Jerusalem housing plan

President Clinton and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak jointly denounced Israel for building new Jewish homes in Har Homa Jerusalem. Clinton called ownership disputed and urged delaying the project while Mubarak said it violates Israel's pledge to defer Jerusalem's fate to mid month negotiations. Both stressed U S peacemaking importance as West Bank clashes occurred.

Ford ends bid for fifth Senate term in Kentucky

Democratic senator Wendell Ford, 72, announced he will not seek a fifth term in 1998, citing a desire to spend time with his grandchildren and frustration with campaign costs. Ford, Kentucky's longest-serving senator, noted he would need about 100,000 dollars weekly through November 1998 to fund reelection and joked about his wife not allowing visitors. President Clinton praised Ford's service as Daschle called him a key power in the caucus.

Albania rebels seize towns and force new government plan

Rebels in southern Albania extended control by looting bases and taking MiG aircraft as police and troops pulled back north. In Kucova three MiGs were hauled from the air base. A shopkeeper urged calm while gunfire echoed. eight were injured. In Tirana President Berisha met opposition leaders to map a coalition government before June elections. The insurgents reject his resignation and demand change. Washington urged rapid implementation of the cease fire and amnesty.

Citadel cadets disciplined after hazing allegations

The Citadel dismissed one male cadet and sanctioned nine others after hazing and harassment of two female cadets. One cadet was cleared. eight received lighter punishments. three previously implicated cadets left. FBI and state investigators probe possible criminal charges.
