A Kansan Marine Private Cecil E. Stanley of Eureka, Kansas, aided a wounded comrade during the sinking of the cruiser USS Chicago in the South Pacific. Private Harold M. Dixon of Warren, Arizona, recounted being wounded and lowered to the water, with Stanley swimming 50 yards to a raft with Dixon aboard as the ship sank.
