Benjamin F Smith Noted Fruit Grower Dies in Douglas County
Benjamin Frank Smith a longtime horticulturist known as Strawberry Smith died Monday night. He arrived in Douglas County in 1880 and led both the State Horticultural Society and the Douglas County Horticultural Society. Survived by brother Robert H of San Antonio, daughter Ida F. Allen of San Diego, and two nieces of Kansas City. An accompanying reminiscence recalls his Civil War era forebears and his lifelong temperance stance. He was a pioneer shipper, first Kansan to ship strawberries to Denver in 1887, and served in leadership roles in local and state horticultural groups since 1896.

FREE EDDIE GREEN ARREST AND RELEASE IN LAWRENCE
Eddie Green an 18 year old Kansas City Kansas youth was released from county jail after questioning by county officers. George Brannan remained jailed and faces a charge of drunkenness on a public highway. The two from Kansas City Kansas had claimed a breakdown near Mun Creek bridge on the Fort to Fort highway while en route to Lawrence. Brannan alleged he was struck by a foe and walked to Lawrence. Green said Brannan was drunk and fell into a culvert injuring his face. County officers doubt involvement in a car theft incident earlier that night.
