Gov Kathleen Sebelius notes a shift from projected prison growth to decline. As of late February the state housed 8,688 inmates, 563 fewer than February 2004, saving about 80 million dollars by delaying new construction per the Council of State Governments' Justice Center report.
Jeanette Brown of Topeka, a 37 year old mother of five, credits the Shawnee County Reentry Program with turning her life around after a four year prison term. Released in June from Topeka Correctional Facility, she describes daily challenges and the effort to secure a larger home while caring for children aged 9 to 17.
Checkers Foods general manager Mike Smith in Lawrence faces higher prices across staple items. Oil, dairy, and eggs rose sharply, with wheat pushing up cereals and baked goods. Government figures project 3.5 to 4.5 percent overall food inflation in 2008, with no relief in sight.
A Leavenworth grocer sold 80 percent lean ground beef for 2.59 per pound last week while the Fort Leavenworth commissary offered 81 percent lean at 1.40 per pound. A gallon of 2 percent milk cost 3.95 at the local store versus 3.02 at the commissary. A 20 ounce loaf of Wonder Bread was 1.51 at the commissary regularly, and Morton iodized salt 26 ounce container was 0.49 locally and 0.50 at the commissary.
