Maryknoll New York AP report describes Frances Anderson disguising as a nun to lure a holdup gang at the Maryknoll Seminary. Police hidden nearby executed a bullhorn surround and exchange of gunfire with five suspects, four wounded, one escaped into the woods.
Washington AP reports Miami businessman Jack B. Cooper invoked the Fifth Amendment when called as a witness in the Bobby Baker investigation. The Senate Rules Committee opened the hearing to the public after closed-door testimony from Scott I. Peek. Tensions rose as Democrats and Republicans clashed over probe scope into Baker’s dealings and related Democratic campaign contributions.
In Durham Duke Hospital staff arranged for a chaplain to speak with two year old Vicki Wray as doctors continued to treat her after a retinal blastoma required the removal of her right eye last summer and her left eye on Monday.
In Nicosia Greek and Turkish Cypriots maintained a fragile cease fire in battered Kuma while shots echoed in nearby Mallia. The British army sent a platoon to Mallia to try to avert a wider clash that could spark full scale conflict.

In Sedalia Missouri two airmen from Whiteman Air Force Base were charged after 14 year old Charlotte Bennett was found dead near Lexington. Airman Ryan 24 admitted hitting and possibly choking the girl and Horstkamp 19 faced statutory rape charges. Both to be arraigned in Lexington magistrate court.
A plan to form a two-committee group to study the feasibility of a federal mental health program covers a 14 county Northeast Kansas area with a main center in Lawrence and branches in Hiawatha Atchison Leavenworth and Ottawa. If approved it would run five years with a $30000 yearly grant and include 15 to 20 staff led by Dr. Lee while also guiding the city county center.
A conservationist and his family will relocate to Lawrence two years after transfer to Kansas City. Paxon and wife Genny with daughters Donna 18 Marsha 10 and Sherri 6 will move after the term. Donna aims to finish high school this spring and attend Kansas University. The family attends the Methodist Church. The conservationist will commute from Kansas City until the move.
The Kaw Basin Water Management Association will hold its annual dinner at 6 30 p m Thursday in the Eldridge Hotel with Col Miles Wachendorf of the Army Corps of Engineers as guest speaker. The event is open to the public and costs 225 per plate. Reservations contact Emil Heck at VI 3 4029.
Governor John Anderson called a meeting of the state Finance Council for next Monday to discuss pay raises for state employees. He considered a possible percent increase for workers not yet benefited by recent raises. The total cost could not be estimated due to variable factors. Kansas has about 40 000 employees. The last general raise was in 1961 at five percent. Kansas ranks fourth from the bottom in state salaries.
The Kansas University debate squads at the Northwest Debate Tournament in St Paul earned multiple honors. Milller of Red Wing and Floyd of Topeka reached octi finals with six wins two losses, while Kauffeld of Minneapolis and Milberg of Arlington also posted six wins two losses. Both teams fell in octi finals. Post event, they dined at Kauffelds home and were hosted by Miller and Milbergs families. Floyd and Miller lost to Minnesota University. Kauffeld and Milberg lost to Nebraska State College.
Kuala Lumpur Malaysia AP reports Malaysia will initiate conscription to bolster its small armed forces due to perceived threat from Indonesia. The move aims to reinforce defenses as regional tensions rise between the two nations.
John Garcia of 1108 W 22nd St Terr was among top prize winners at the 41st Kansas Artists Exhibition in Topeka. He placed third in watercolors with Nocturne, selected from 61 paintings by 38 Kansas artists at the Topeka High School gallery.
The mass parachute jump by Company C 12th Special Forces Group was canceled due to bad weather. It had been set for 10 a.m. February 29 at Clifford Cox farm east of Lawrence on Highway 10, with hundreds watching prior war games and guerrilla warfare demonstrations.

Dr. John McCarthy, formerly on staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital since December 1960, becomes a pathology consultant at Kansas City General Hospital in affiliation with Missouri University. He plans to move with his family to La Jolla, California, after June 1 to join the Scripps Clinic as an associate. Lawrence Memorial remains with a part time pathology setup, using an out of town pathologist weekly and sending tissues elsewhere for analysis.
A four engine DC4 operating from New York to Bradley Field sleet and gale conditions caused a crashing fire at Castle Island Waterfront Terminal. Initial reports suggested yard workers might have been killed, but all were accounted for.
The Baldwin rail dispute centers on Santa Fe Railroad plans to abandon 23 miles of track from Lawrence to Ottawa and to close Baldwin depot. A compromise plan proposes removing Baldwin–Lawrence track and restoring service between Baldwin and Ottawa, with a final decision awaiting discussion by Baldwin grain customers.
