Kansas lawmakers hear grass roots bid for square dancing as state folk dance
In Topeka three Kansas square dancers urged the Senate Governmental Organization Committee to back a bill making square dancing the official state folk dance. The proposal, part of a broader push with 20 states considering similar measures, faces skepticism from Sen. A L Gooch who questions the uniqueness. John Rothrock, leader of the Kansas Square Dancers Assn., argued square dancing is a wholesome, healthful tradition, noting two to three hours equals five miles of walking and benefits arthritic joints. Only Sen. Ben Vidricksen voiced firm support, while other lawmakers anticipated debates over competing dances such as polka.
