Caws Leaves KU for Carnegie Corp Appointment

Dr. Peter J. Caws, chairman of the Kansas University Philosophy Department, will resign at semester end to join the Carnegie Corporation of New York as a full time appointee. He plans summer travels in Europe and will begin duties in the fall.

Wesley Brown Nominated as Federal District Judge

President Kennedy nominated Wesley E. Brown of Hutchinson Kansas to be a federal district judge for Kansas. Brown, 54, a Democrat, is a Wichita Bankruptcy Referee and will fill the seat of Delmas C. Hill who was elevated last September to the U.S. Circuit Court.

Three Charged With Burglary at Drug Store

Three young men were charged in County Court with burglary and grand larceny after a 2:20 a.m. break in at Cooper-Walgren drug store, 847 Mass St. Lawrence University sophomores Harold Williams and Gary Engel, and Robert Ebey Jr., all 18–19, signed confessions and were arrested at 1142 Ind Ave by KU and city police. Items including 1,000 dexamyl pills and cigarettes, clocks, watches, and shaving supplies were found in their apartment.

Skie Buys 20 Acres Near 23rd Street

John Skie, manager of the Dr. Pepper Bottling Co., purchased 20 acres south of 23rd Street on the west side of U S 59 from Joe Lesch of Route 5. The land was bought personally by Skie, not for the bottling plant, with no development plans for at least five years, according to Lesch.

Missourian Injured in Turnpike Crash near Lawrence

A 20-year-old Cameron man, John Cecil Kirkendall, was critically injured when his car struck the rear of a semi-trailer 15 miles west of Lawrence on the Kansas Turnpike. Truck driver Marvin L. Newstrom of Herington reported $300 damage to his vehicle and $1,000 to the car. Kirkendall was taken to Stormont-Vail Hospital and to be moved to the University Medical Center.

New Bridge Proposed Across the River Near Sixth and Massachusetts

The plan calls for a downstream multi lane bridge west of the current span to ease riverbank construction. It would be the city’s third river crossing, located midway between the Kansas Turnpike bridge to the north and the existing span near downtown, linking North Lawrence with future industrial growth.
