Two Year Study Sought On Wichita University Incorporation

A Kansas House resolution with 73 signatures requests a two year study of incorporating Wichita University into the state system. Fire Alarm at Central Church Prevents Fire

Fire units were alerted to the Central Church of Christ at 1501 N.H. St after smoke was seen during electrical work. No fire was found and only minor damage resulted from the incident this morning.

Rights Committee Set at KU Establishes five member group

The All Student Council at Kansas University formed a five member committee on human rights led by ASC president Ron Dalby. The panel will work with the Lawrence human relations commission study and will appoint its members soon. Primary elections are slated for March 21-22 and the general vote March 28-29. Profs John Pozdro and Allen Crafton discuss a forthcoming Kansas themed piece with the working title options So This Is Kansas or Onward Kansas. The Overland Express will arrive June 17 with 12 15 wagons about 150 horses and many riders delivering merchandise from Kansas City to local merchants. The journey lasts nearly three days. A Centennial Tea is planned for June 25 to honor senior and outstanding pioneer citizens. Lawrence faces a second sack on August 20 reenacted by the Douglas County Trail Riders retracing Quantrill’s 1863 raid route into town.

Seventeen Local Beauties Enter Jaycees Miss Lawrence Contest

Kansas Track Men to Compete in Chicago Indoor Event

Kansas University track athletes head to Chicago for the Chicago Daily News indoor meet this Friday night. Two miler Bill Mills and the two mile relay team Kirk Hagan Gordon Davis Bill Thornton and Bill Dotson will participate. Earlier, strong winds cut power for a half hour at KP and L substation 13th and Oregon and damaged a plate glass window at the KP and L office 7th and Mass.

City Approves 55000 In Park Program Notes

The Lawrence City Commission approved issuing 55000 in temporary notes for the 1961 park program. The action occurred during a brief Tuesday meeting and advances the community’s park plans under the new program.

The commission okayed a shelterhouse at Centennial Park two new parks in north and east Lawrence a lighted baseball diamond and sewer district paving petitions in the South Hills Addition. Zoning for two apartment lots west of Michigan Street on 7th and the LeDong Rest Home was approved on final reading while 24th Street area rezonings moved to first reading.

The ground hog became an honored American animal when colonists chose it as a substitute for the European hedgehog. Early European tradition held the hedgehog cast a shadow on Candlemas Day.

Nazarene Convention At Lawrence Church In 3 Day Event

The Lawrence Church of the Nazarene hosts a three day Preachers and Missionary Convention for the Kansas City District with separate daytime meetings and 7 30 pm joint services. About 200 delegates attend led by Rev Spurgeon Hendrix who oversees Nazarene missionary work in Cuba. Hendrix, back from Cuba February 14, will speak while overseeing ongoing work despite families being withdrawn due to political conditions.
