Wives See No Percentage in Buying Old Coins With New
HAL BOYLE reports on a surge in coin collecting and rare money, noting the rise in American numismatists from about 25,000 to 30,000. Experts warn that old U S bills from 1862 to 1879 can be worth at least double face value, with some rare pieces worth over $1,000. Confederate money sees a modest boom, but remains far below Yankee dollar demand. Schulman, a Amsterdam-born dealer, hosts an $80,000 Waldorf-Astoria auction next month to liquidate the Morgan collection, while stressing that kings trade smarter and hoarding gold is less common among coin collectors.
