Lawrence approves policy to review future city art donations

Lawrence city commissioners adopt a policy to guide review and placement of all future art gifts after a heated debate over the From the Ashes veterans memorial sculpture at Union Pacific Depot. Bill Carswell of the Arts Commission says the policy helps avoid overheated sentiment while allowing rejection with clear reasons. The memorial, depicting a phoenix transforming into a human figure, drew opposition over depot aesthetics though veterans cite its symbolic link to wartime departures. The sculpture remains tied to a 2004 dedication target despite the commission’s February 2000 vote to accept it.

KU faculty propose single parking commission for hearings

An ad hoc KU committee urges routing parking decisions through a campus wide parking commission to simplify rules and gather public input. Led by Tom Malinazzi, the group says current parking talks are diverted by SenEx and University Council, potentially bypassing the parking director. The proposal, likely to face opposition from Don Kearns, aims to streamline consensus before reaching the university council.

Renovation planned for Kansas City International Airport terminals

Kansas City International Airport will undergo a 183.4 million dollar renovation to update all three terminals. The project, themed Jazzin Up the Place, begins next month and aims for completion in 2004. The work includes new lounges, ticketing areas, flooring, roofing, and 50 percent more concession space, with high tech displays for multiple airlines. Officials say the airport will look lighter and brighter and handle increased use after a surge from 3.8 million in 1973 to 11.9 million last year. The plan is financed by general aviation bonds from 1988.
