Police chief ties local robberies to crack cocaine use

Lawrence Police Chief Ron Olin linked a string of robberies and burglaries to crack cocaine activity in the city and county. Five robberies were reported between Feb 27 and Friday with only one arrest. A Kansas City man was arrested for drug sales at a crack house on 217 Ill. Officials at DCCCA and Headquarters noted cocaine availability but no sharp surge in abuse, while noting cocaine has surpassed marijuana in use in many programs.

Ex KBI director reflects on life within the law

James Malson, 55 of Wellsville, retired as Kansas Bureau of Investigation director after 31 years in law enforcement. He cites technology as the era’s biggest change and notes policing is now more demanding amid new DNA analysis aiding major crimes in Douglas County and beyond. His career includes 23 years as a KBI agent in Olathe and Ottawa and service as Topeka director.

Murderer sentenced to life for Lawrence beating death

Kenneth Lee Morris, 29, received a life term after pleading regret for the death of 40 year old Danny Davis, beaten with a golf club at a Lawrence residence. Davis died five days later at Kansas University Medical Center. Morris told Judge Mike Malone he was sorry for Davis’s death and cited drug problems. Witnesses testified Morris bought cocaine at Davis’s home, then returned to steal cash or valuables to repay the drug money, breaking in and beating Davis. Morris claimed mistreatment by police during the investigation. See Convicted, page 11A.

U.S. officials eye boarding NKorea ship suspected of Scuds

U.S. intelligence tracks a North Korean cargo ship believed to carry Scud missiles to Iran. CBS News says the vessel could be boarded this weekend in the Indian Ocean if it maintains course, with Iran as the ultimate port and possible transfer to Syria. Pentagon declined comment.
