Allied forces on Java retreat through mountainous terrain amid fierce fighting as Japanese troops push toward Soerabaja and Batavia falls. Dutch and allied units endure heavy bombardment and fatigue while trying to delay the advancing invaders.
Two allied tankers limped into a Canadian East Coast port under their own power after separate torpedo strikes. Holes torn in hulls were large enough for a submarine to pass through. one had most of its gasoline cargo intact. A deck gun crew repelled the attacking submarine for an hour.
The Metropolitan Life Insurance bulletin says 2,800,000 men of fighting age survive today thanks to lower death rates since 1900. The reduction is attributed to better medical care sanitation and improved food.
The U S War Department says Subic Bay air attack disrupted Japanese plans for a renewed offensive against Gen Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines. It reports negligible Japanese activity in Bataan over the last day and notes a March 4 air strike that sank or damaged multiple ships and likely drowned thousands as troops were aboard.
Soviet forces recaptured Yukhnov on the central front as they encircle the 16th German army near Staraya Russa. Reports say heavy German casualties were inflicted along a one mile sector while Germans fled, abandoning wounded and munitions. Moscow suffered a night raid and British air efforts were grounded by bad weather. Rommel reportedly left Africa to confer with Hitler as Libyan operations pause.
At the Wichita convention the Kansas livestock men voted 52 to 26 against a resolution to end AAA and soil conservation payments to Dan Casement of Manhattan, a known AAA foe. They call for modifying or eliminating the weigh hour law to extend the work week amid wartime shortages. Edward C. Robbins of Belvaire selected association president with Emil C. Kielhorn of Cambre and James Tomson of Wakarusa as officers.

Tomas F. Ryan III resigns as president of Mid Continent Airlines Inc to enter military service. He is 38 with a wife and three children. The board elected Otte Miller as president and designated John S. Wynne as chairman of the board.
A British military commentator reported no deterioration in Burma over the past three days with Rangoon and Pegu still in British hands. He noted a serious defender position but said it is no worse than prior days and praised the defenders as part of a determined resistance alongside Indian and Chinese troops amid outnumbered conditions against Japanese forces.
A Senate banking subcommittee approved a wartime measure to place small businesses in the war effort under a new WPB deputy. It would create a 100 million dollar Treasury financed Small War Plants corporation run by Don Nelson with power to lend money, arrange contracts, and allocate prime defense work to qualifying manufacturers. The plan aims to integrate small firms into army navy maritime and defense procurement.
Prime Minister John Curtin announced a proclamation making all Australian men up to age 60 liable for military service. Maj. Gen. Henry Gordon Bennett warned that an invasion of Australia could occur within weeks and urged swift action to strike the enemy before landing.
Washington March 6 Congress may seek to recapture up to 3 billion dollars in profits from firms sharing in the 56 billion dollar war production program. Chairman Byrd of the joint committee on non essential expenditures urged action after preliminary estimates showed high earnings potential. He plans to push recapture provisions after hearings next week.
The House Ways and Means Committee approved raising the federal debt limit from 65 billion to 125 billion to fund wartime purchases. Secretary Morgenthau warned borrowing power would run out by April and supported a voluntary savings plan over forced measures while projecting debt to rise through June 1943 and beyond. He cited already adopted voluntary payroll deductions and outlined changes in debt laws including an option to substitute Treasury defense savings stamps.
In Kunming Chiang Kai-shek praised the American volunteer group fliers of the Chinese air force. He said the AVG has earned a world wide reputation for courage and victories and pledged support for the families of any AVG members lost. He spoke at a dinner honoring the pilots and expressed hope to celebrate victory in Tokyo.

President Roosevelt signed the largest appropriations bill in history, totalling 32.76 billion dollars, to fund the army lend lease aid and the maritime commission. The package pushes defense and war appropriations past 142 billion dollars for 1941 to 1943, with about 23 billion for the army and significant lend lease and shipbuilding authorizations.

The army plans two main reception centers for evacuees on the southeast California fringe Owens River Valley near 270 miles northeast of Los Angeles and Parker Dam Blythe district by the Colorado River. General DeWitt said centers will process aliens to be excluded from military areas and determine their suitability before resettlement for the war. FBI raids across northern California target two Japanese secret societies and an association aiding Japan with about 30 officers involved in operations near Sacramento and air base areas. Federal and state agents raid Albuquerque area for enemy aliens and contraband.
Topeka reports blustery March winds forecast for Kansas with speeds of 25 to 35 mph. Dust could rise in western areas though statewide moisture is adequate. Sunshine yesterday cooled to 62 at Ellis after a 38 degree low. colder air expected to reach western and north central counties tonight.

In Wichita Kansas on March 6 representatives from eleven Kansas cities met to discuss attracting defense work and new industries for area machine shops. Carl Hines president of the Wichita Chamber pledged Wichita’s cooperation not to draw workers from neighboring towns and offered aid in securing shuttle trains to the region. He noted improved transport could ease Wichita housing needs and aid workers in defense plants. Hutchinson reported an idle soda ash plant and cooperators promised assistance to revive the business.
Gov. Payne Ratner was informed by the office of price administration that the registration of all sugar consumers tentatively set for March 17 to 20 has been postponed. The registration of sugar dealers, initially planned for March 9, will also be delayed.
Topeka reports February benefits paid out reached 317,888 dollars, up from January 267,914 dollars. Claims dropped to 5,547 from 9,442, with fewer claimants overall but higher total payments.
