Europe Likely Had Hottest Summer In 500 Years
A 2003 European heat wave killed about 19 000 people and set temperature records across the continent. Researchers from the University of Bern analyzed tree rings and soil data to show European winters and annual temps from 1973–2002 were the warmest in five centuries, with August deaths peaking in England, Wales, and France reporting roughly 14 802 fatalities in France and 2 000 excess deaths in the UK.

Greek elections near as Olympics loom over polls
The contest pits Costas Karamanlis’s New Democracy against George Papandreou’s PASOK in a tight race with both parties appealing to a broader electorate. Polls show a slim ND lead as Greeks face high Olympic costs and stalled projects, including a roof for the Olympic Stadium, five months before the Games.
