The Lawrence City Commission rejected all bids for a hangar shop at the municipal airport after bids exceeded the engineer’s $32 500 estimate. Negotiations with Kansas Steel Built Co. suggested possible savings with design changes, and new bids will be sought in about two weeks.
Reservations for the second Eggs and Issues breakfast in Lawrence are filling as US Senator James Pearson and state officials plan to speak on state and national issues. KU elections move to April 23 24. Wescoe to meet Chalmers next week. campus events include a high school candidates forum and a Bishop Pike talk. Registration for the April 1 Lawrence elections opens with weekday hours until March 11.
In Honolulu AP reports the Enterprise, the world’s largest warship, returns to sea two months after a fatal fire and explosion that killed 28 crew and wounded 85. Navy expected three months of repairs but Pearl Harbor shipyard work and crew effort allowed early completion.
Dr. James I. Perry 65 of 1602 Crescent Rd. died at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City after a heart ailment. Funeral 3 p.m. Friday at Rumsey Funeral Home with Rev. Benton Roy Hanan. burial Memorial Park Cemetery and Elks Lodge services. Survived by widow Warneta two daughters Jane Burnison of Orange California Jill Hemphill of 2019 Vt St and two grandchildren. He practiced dentistry in Lawrence since 1936 and was a noted trapshooter and golfer.
Sirhan Sirhan testified that Kennedy’s support for Israel, from its 1948 founding onward, sparked his decision to kill. He recalled loving Kennedy until that moment when a TV film showed Kennedy aiding Israel. Sirhan, born in Jerusalem, described ongoing anger at Israel policy nine months after the shooting.
James William Guffey 18 of Eudora posted a 1500 bond Tuesday afternoon on a second degree breaking and entering charge linked to thefts at the Elks Club on West 23rd Street. A preliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. March 12 in Douglas County Court. Guffey and three Eudora juveniles have been questioned.
Dr. Joseph M. Daly kept his 1950 model car for 19 years, drove it to work, and taught his family to drive in it before baling the vehicle into a cube. He plans a plaque noting purchase date motor number baling date and mileage. Two juveniles ages 16 and 17 are not charged yet. Police recover most liquor from a break in and $97. Law rence suspects face hearings for malicious destruction of private property and breaking a cafe window with $2 000 bond each.

In Lark Utah a 61 year old miner William Buck Jones surfaced alive after a rock fall that buried him in a lead zinc and silver mine about 20 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. Rescuer Ken Squires recalled the moment Jones spoke asking when he would be freed.
An estimated 65 dollars was taken from Strick's Drive-in Virginia Parker reported to Lawrence police. A back door was forced. Two other incidents followed including a school break in at Lawrence High School with desks ransacked. Probing further, Jean Murphy reported 20 dollars lost at The Studio and Lauren McClure noted a 39 dollar battery theft at Winter Chevrolet. A BB gun damaged a home window causing 200 dollars in damage.
An estimated 500 damage occurred about 10 p.m. Tuesday when a car owned by Edward K Bishop of 1601 E Glenn Dr overturned in a ditch 1.4 miles north of Baldwin on the Vinland blacktop road. Bishop was uninjured after losing control on a curve near the Roy Snowbarger home on Rt 3 Baldwin. Four accidents were reported to Lawrence police on Tuesday, all with less than 100 damage.
Douglas County Commission clarified Civil Defense duties urging action only on major disasters or when requested by government agencies. Officials said unit not staffed for full scale rescues, and directed updating of the emergency plan.
Plans reveal a $50 million affiliated hospital center in Roxbury housing Boston Hospital for Women Peter Bent Brigham and Robert B Brigham Hospitals. The four-tower on stilts complex will surround a central core delivering shared services and will be the largest hospital project in the nation.
