Kansas high court decision on school finance appeal likely
The Kansas Supreme Court is asked to take jurisdiction over the Gannon v. Kansas school finance case as a Shawnee County panel pauses hearings. If the high court accepts, a ruling could come by late 2015 or 2016, affecting 2016-2017 funding. Local districts Wichita Kansas City Hutchinson and Dodge City lead the suit challenging underfunding and equity. Shawnee Mission joins, arguing current formulas inequitable. Proponents cite weighting factors for hard to teach students. opponents say those factors don’t reflect true costs. The case could shape roughly half of the $6 billion general fund.
