Tuition interest money kept by regents questioned
TOPERA A key lawmaker said a bill to credit Kansas regents universities with interest earned on student tuition and fees probably would wait until next year. A Senate Ways and Means hearing on Senate Bill 490 failed to action, with chairman Stephen Morris noting the budget constraints. Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway proposed delaying the measure for one or two years as part of broader block grant funding studies. The proposal would allow KU and the six regents schools to retain about 2.7 million dollars annually in tuition interest, with KU Lawrence contributing 900,000 and KU Medical Center 174,000. Reggie Robinson of the Kansas Board of Regents said the bill would aid universities and signal state support for student purchasing power. Staff contact listed for follow-up.
