Study finds many juveniles unfit for adult trial
A University of Massachusetts led study of 11 to 24 year olds across four jurisdictions finds one third of 11 to 13 year olds and 20 percent of 14 to 15 year olds show reasoning and awareness levels akin to mentally ill adults deemed not competent to stand trial. The researchers say age and intelligence drive competence more than gender or race. They estimate thousands of juveniles are tried as adults despite seriously impaired understanding of proceedings, and urge lawmakers to reassess juvenile transfers to adult courts.
