Sioux City Iowa March 8 Death toll from the worst Iowa aviation accident rose to 16 as a Mid- Continent Airlines DC-3 crashed in a snowstorm near the airport yesterday. Nine others survived the wreck. The pilot Captain James Graham 34 of Kansas City the co pilot Philip K. Toler 80 of Mississippi Kansas and first officer Ernest FeEilert 26 of Overland Park Kansas died. Five soldiers among the dead and survivors included W C Ding L L Nogosek M H Steffenson Fred Kellog Jr Eldon A Clark. Coroner identified Loon as Daniel Lipman and hospital reports listed Marilyn Wundbury as injured.
About 1 100 persons attended the Douglas County rural schools music festival and talent show in Lawrence’s Community building. Teachers and pupils made up most attendees as schools presented specialty numbers and a combined chorus led by Dr Elin Jorgensen and pianist Allane West. Festival organizers included Mrs Olive Randel and others.
Two reserve flying outfits based in the Kansas City area shift from weekend service to full time status at the Olathe Naval Air Station. VMF 215, a marine fighter squadron, and FASRON 885, a navy unit, prepare for intensive training and operations as personnel report for processing and clothing issues. Members from Lawrence and surrounding areas form the core of these units.
Senate leaders predicted enough votes to defeat Morse's 18 years six months draft age change as UMTS debate continues. Morse contends for 91 month service while Cain argues amendments would cripple the bill. The opening of the creative writing class at Liberty Memorial High School has been delayed to a future date. The class, taught by Professor Erne et the Gateersiey of Keema, Sal, runs from 7:30 to 9:30. Beginners are eligible, with several returning students enrolled last year.
The Lawrence city opens its new $425,000 municipal building at Eighth and Vermont with a 1:30 pm public tour and a 3 pm Serenaders concert by Liberty Memorial High School musicians. City officials guide tours while fire and police setups await a future move.
The U S Senate crime investigating committee and the Treasury Department clashed as Special Internal Revenue Tax Agent Holden Sanford refused to testify. Kefauver warned of contempt of the Senate and Sanford said he was bound to follow Washington orders, protesting the clash between panels. Sanford had been named as contact for a $12,500 investment link with a Fresno operator and a brothel party.
In a closed meeting in Kansas City today, Big Seven faculty advisers weighed adopting a freshman eligibility rule to allow first year college freshmen to try out for varsity teams immediately. Supporters cite lower enrollment and parity, while skeptics warn of intensified competition and destabilizing effects on rosters.
Topeka March 2 The Kansas state board of review which censors motion pictures is being abolished with the transfer of its records furniture and equipment to the Hutchinson reformatory. The Senate committee chair said the board is no longer needed as the motion picture industry is largely self regulating. The board had a carryover of 17655 dollars at the start of 1961. Other bills passed would extend guardians of veterans to invest funds and address township actions in annexation events. Polls close on election day.
Lawrence nopeasti moves toward a March 20 primary for five city commission posts as Simon Hurwitz Byron Sneegas and Professor G Bradhan join the field bringing total candidates to ten. Other hopefuls for the commission include Hayden Johnson Beaman Read Crown Kappelman Noland and for the school board Shenk Pine Wright Young.
