Flood waters isolated Los Angeles as more rain and mountain snow swelled the Santa Ana river, stranding millions and leaving 48 dead and up to 10,000 homeless. Communications failed citywide while Riverside and Santa Ana suffered severe damage and refugees filled churches and theaters.
The Kansas Supreme Court dismissed the state's appeal seeking $150,000 from the National Bank of Topeka related to Finney bond manipulations. Settlement terms with surety companies were agreed, with no disclosure. Also in Kansas City, closing arguments in the eleventh vote fraud trial featured Frances Ryan as a focal point amid allegations of election irregularities.
New Rochelle New York March 3 12 year old Peter Levine vanished last Thursday and federal agents hold back hoping for a safe return. If seven days pass without news the Lindbergh law could trigger federal jurisdiction. Murray Levine pleads to be left to handle the case and officials offer no comment on the time limit or ransom reports.
Claude Puckett, 60, Hutchinson Kansas traveling salesman injured in a two car collision on highway 59 south of Lawrence Tuesday evening was discharged from Memorial hospital. His injuries were severe lacerations and bruises though not dangerous. His wife Edna Puckett was fatally injured and buried in Hutchinson yesterday. The other driver K E Butler of Lawrence was treated and released with non dangerous injuries.
Frank H. Terrell, attorney for the Kansas City Leavenworth and Western Railway, told federal Judge Hopkins that bus service between Leavenworth and Kansas City will start April 1. The railroad has compromised back taxes with Leavenworth County commissioners.
An exhibition of modern California architecture is on display on the third floor of Marvin Hall at K U under the department of architecture. It will remain on campus until March 25 and may move later to Spooner Thayer museum. Forty from Topeka attended and Seidel’s long service as officer and member was cited. Several associates from Wilson and Company in Kansas City attended as out of town guests. A Dutch lunch followed the lodge ceremonies and gifts from past exalted rulers were presented.

Senator Bailey of North Carolina condemned the administration’s reorganization bill saying it would end any separation of relief spending from partisan politics. He warned the plan would transfer legislative power to the president and place civil service under a single officeholder, surrendering Congress’s budget oversight.
The House Naval Affairs Committee approved a 1.1136 billion expansion to add 46 combatant ships 22 auxiliary vessels and 950 planes with a nonaggression policy pledge. The measure funds battleships carriers cruisers destroyers submarines and naval testing and a 30 million experimentation fund.

Gov. Walter A. Haxman vetoed five items totaling 10 000 dollars from a house appropriation bill. The vetoed items included 1000 dollars for a new carpet for the adjutant general office and 600 dollars for repairs at the Atchison orphans home. The plan also proposed 5000 dollars for a sewer at the Kansas state fair grounds in Hutchinson and 400 dollars to the secretary of state for distributing the directory of state officers and “interesting facts concerning Kansas.” An additional 3000 dollars would have funded a new carpet and sound pad and furniture repairs for the house of representatives. He noted the departments should have lived within their budgets if previously funded.

Light rain fell at Dodge City and Goodland, with unsettled conditions statewide. Temperatures may fall to near 32 in the north and 35 in the south tonight, rising to about 50 tomorrow.
Four assailants battered Isao Abe head of the Social Mass party in his Tokyo home during a riotous parliamentary committee session. Abe, 73, was attacked as debate on the government war control bill continued. Social Mass members then targeted Home Minister Nobumasa Suretsugu in a heated reconvened session.
