Rainy primary turnout dampens Lawrence city races

The Journal-World notes wet weather reduced turnout in the Lawrence area with about 5.4 percent of 36 061 registered voters casting ballots by pre noon. Clerks predict a final turnout between 20 and 25 percent as polls stay open until 7 pm for city commission and school board races including 12 candidates for Lawrence City Commission.

Clinton meets House Republicans on economic plan debate

Senate regents clash over tuition increase plans in Topeka

A Senate Ways and Means panel debated university budgets as Regent Chair Shirley Palmer faulted the panel for proposing a 2 percent out of state tuition rise beyond the regents approved for fall 1993. She called it an unwarranted intrusion into tuition setting and warned the schedule was ill timed with printed fee guides. The committee pressed ahead with budgets for Kansas University and state schools, approving a KU Law credit hour fee rising to 40 dollars.

Lawrence school bond plan trims property tax levy

Lawrence school officials report favorable market conditions and a refinancing plan reduce interest on a $33.5 million bond issue. The district will fund two new elementaries, a fourth junior high, renovations to Central Junior High and Lawrence High, and expansion of Wakarusa Valley School while achieving an estimated savings of 350000 to 450000 from Moody's upgraded Aa rating. The projected levy drops from 99.64 to about 90.62 mills, with 1993 94 year retirement at 7.18 mills and an $69 tax on an 80000 home.

Armed sect releases 2 women, children during siege

At least six people dead as the Branch Davidians siege continues in Waco Texas. Two women and two children left the compound amid heightened activity while 18 children had been released earlier. David Koresh, age 33, reportedly gravely wounded, with authorities negotiating via the FBI.
