Headquarters today announced a voluntary pullback of German forces from positions on both banks of the Ancre River along the Franco Belgian front. The move narrows lines and affects ongoing trench boundaries in the region. No further details on units or timing were provided.
Full official confirmation of Germanys bid to ally Mexico and Japan against the United States was reported from the White House and state department. Miss Maude Long longtime circulation nurse for the Journal-World died at 16 West Fourteenth Street after a two week illness. An operation a year ago may have failed and an internal infection is believed to have caused death. She was a University School of Pharmacy graduate in 1904 and later worked as a pharmacist and in the Griesa nurseries office before joining the Journal-World. Survived by mother Mrs A J Mitchell and three sisters Mrs J W Brown of Oakland Cal Mrs Charles W Lehman of Hobart Oklahoma and Miss Carrie Mitchell in Hawaii.
Washington March 1 newsprint manufacturers asked the federal trade commission to fix prices for their products presenting cost figures to the commission. Jobbers will be heard tomorrow and a price decision is expected by Saturday. Publishers expect a maximum price of 2.50 or 260 a hundred pounds for International Paper Company products. Uncertainty remains over single or mill specific pricing based on production costs.
Hong Kong, Britain s Chinese colony, offers a gift of ity million dollars to aid the war effort. The sum will be drawn from current revenue and from a local three million dollar loan raised in the colony.
Nineteen young women carpenters left London for France to work for the war effort. They will remain for the duration of the war, employed mainly in building barracks for the British army.

The 4th Missouri Infantry, stationed at Fort Riley Kansas, was mustered out of federal service today. Companies entrained for home stations after leaving the Mexican border area.
The Kansas Senate approved a bill providing about 172000 dollars in state pay for guardsmen who served federally last year. Enlisted infantry will gain around 70 dollars, Battery A Topeka and Troop A Eureka about 100 dollars each. The act includes Aroop A members home from the border and faces House approval. It also funds agricultural and vocational aid for high schools with 32000 dollars plus a nine year 25 percent federal rise, requires state matching funds, and includes an accounting reform for all state bodies. The House passed the Harvey measure to streamline county government and the Layton bill to deposit funds in banks and pay interest to the state treasury. Theodore Copeland colored, a music teacher from Kansas City, arrested in Lawrence with thirty obscene letters signed Ruth in California. W G Means postal inspector and Under Sheriff George Schulz took Copeland to Topeka federal court. Copeland confessed authorship as officers found his room wallpapered with photographs.
Bordeaux March 1 The American freighter Rochester has arrived at the mouth of the Gironde. The Rochester and the Orleans were the first American vessels to leave the United States for Europe after the breach of diplomatic relations with Germany. The Orleans reached Bordeaux last Monday.
