Night of Fires Devastates Powers Weightman Works

Night fires raged across Pittsburgh area as winds drove flames from the Powers & Weightman chemical works and related structures. The blaze, first seen around 10 PM, caused massive losses likely over a million dollars while other sites including Coon Bros. produce, Echo carpet mill, and several dwellings suffered damage. Firefighters faced long delays due to concurrent blazes in wool mills and cold conditions, with explosions and a river of burning oil creating chaos. By dawn, much of the chemical works lay in ashes, and authorities estimated machine and stock losses between one and one and a half million.
