Smoking ban takes effect at midnight in Lawrence
The city adopts a Texas inspired ordinance banning smoking in all enclosed workplaces with fines of 100 dollars for first violations. Enforcement rests with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical on a complaint basis, not patrols, with outdoor patios allowed and several venues seeking outdoor dining permits. Opponents push a referendum as petitions gather support while some businesses brace for changes.
