The government ends the year with a possible first surplus in the balance of payments for April through June, while the federal budget runs a deficit. Fiscal 1965 deficit is estimated at 3.8 billion, debt near 317 billion. Tax cuts remain, with aims to balance in coming years.
A 15 man search party found a woman's body and footprints on a Baja California beach where two pleasure craft sank last week. The area yielded a life jacket and clothing near Denise Winter who swam ashore, with other recovered items suggesting more survivors, including a possible mother of Denise and the Wynn family victims.
STEVENSVILLE Mont AP a brown bear mauled two boys in a tent at a forest campsite Monday night Richard Lee Good 15 and David Presta 16 Hellgate High School wrestlers and trackmen in Missoula were hospitalized with bites and gashes after the bear charged their tent The boys fled barefoot and half dressed nearly a mile to a ranch as the bear retreated into the woods Both boys described the bear as large and powerful and said it attacked again after they woke partially only to be dragged by Presta into the woods by his leg The incident ended with the bear further away and the boys seeking help
Jesse Sweezer a 63 year old man from Route 1 was released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital after treatment for a snake bite on his right foot. He was admitted Saturday after the bite occurred at his Lakeview home and the snake was identified as copperhead. Lois Johnson treated for a fall at LMH roller skating suffered a sprained right elbow and was released. Frank Castin lodged a fish hook in his left thumb while fishing at Lake Dabinawa and was released after removal.
Senate Democratic leader says House Republicans threaten to pull support from Johnson unless he orders indiscriminate bombing of North Vietnam. He accuses GOP of seeking total victory at low American casualties, while excluding Senate GOP leader Dirksen from criticism. Ford calls for immediate broad military action and a naval blockade.
The Agriculture Department reports cigarette consumption at 533 billion for the fiscal year, up 24 billion from last year after a pre-report dip. Secretary of Commerce John T. Connors says the economy advanced in April to June with new peaks in personal income employment industrial production and retail sales. He cautions on the stock market noting it did not look as bright.
Senator Warren G Magnuson introduced a bill to create a national sanctuary for birds fish and mammals threatened with extinction. He cited Interior Department data showing 24 bird species and 12 mammals vanishing with 35 more mammals and 30 to species of native birds at risk.

Thomas J. Sweeney Jr aged 77 longtime Lawrence banker died this morning at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He served as president of Peoples State Bank and later worked as personnel manager at Sunflower Ordnance Works. Burial at Mt Calvary Cemetery. Memorials to St John’s Church. Survived by wife Ethel and son Thomas M. Sweeney.
KU aviation alum Captain Gordon Engle, 32, achieved astronaut wings after piloting the X-15 to 282000 feet for an 11 minute flight. The mission aimed to study infrared and ultraviolet horizons while delivering new spaceflight data. Engle, among America’s Ten Outstanding Young Men, described the view as stunning and noted clouds and color bands across the horizon.
AP reports a bus crash on the Pan American Highway near Chinchallote left at least 35 dead including many children. Nine missing and several injured. Among the 54 passengers were 40 members of a Costa Rican children’s ballet en route to perform in Tegucigalpa.

Lawrence kansas motorists will have emergency service on the Turnpike during the approaching three day July 4 holiday. L W Newcomer chief engineer manager says the Kansas Turnpike Patrol will be at full strength for peak periods and Wichita radio dispatchers will relay emergency requests to six service areas.
A lone bandit robbed the walk-in facility of Kansas City Bank and Trust Co. at 13th and Baltimore, taking more than $6,000. Teller Pat Scott reported a Negro suspect, 30 to 35, slender, wearing a tan hat and beige sweater with a white shirt, who used a small pistol to force her to the floor. Vice President Julian Bagby estimated the loss. This followed another bank holdup in the area the previous day, when a man escaped with over $6,000 from Guaranty State Bank in Kansas City Kansas.
The House approved by voice vote a constitutional change to define presidential disability and line of succession. The measure, spurred by the Kennedy assassination, would allow removal of a disabled president and permanent vacancy filling via a nominated vice president confirmed by both chambers.
The House Republican policy committee backed a $1 billion annual military pay increase approved by the House Armed Services Committee. Rep. John Rhodes of Arizona noted the bill would cost twice the administration’s proposal, arguing that saving on military pay is not good economy.
