In Cleveland Ohio on June 30 John L Whitfield awaited murder charges for killing patrolman Dennis Griffin. He refused both food and drink, reporting eighty seven hours without eating and no water since Thursday night as guards noted the deprivation.

Applications for bonus have arrived from all parts of the world since the board began accepting them. Yesterday the board received two mail applications, including one from Ed Todd formerly of Lawrence now in Buenos Aires. Four sailors died and four were injured when steam and hot water escaped in the fire room of the destroyer Williamson. An explosion followed a sudden air pressure rise as a hood cover failed. The ship returned to port with the injured and bodies ashore at the naval hospital. In Philadelphia nine sailors were injured in an explosion on the cruiser Richmond at the navy yard.
The model road demonstration by the J. D. Adams company finished at noon and will be shipped to Ames Iowa for a similar test under Iowa Agricultural College. Professor W C McNown of the K U school of engineering oversaw the work with twenty students and is compiling cost data for a fall road bulletin. Lewis Green a colored man aged about middle age was found dead around 8 am in a room at the old Savoy hotel at Ninth and Vermont. Friends say he suffered from heart disease and was not expected to live long, with witnesses seeing him on the streets around 3 am. Funeral services are set for Monday at 2:38 pm from CrossSidgets, with Rev. Ge Jackson officiating and interment at the cemetery.
