Convicted Slayer Chooses Execution by Shooting
Salt Lake City Utah June 29 1906 Convicted slayer Howard De Weese sentenced to death for the murder of his wife last September has elected to be shot rather than hanged The Utah law allows death by shooting but he asked guards to avoid a drawn out death and to aim to be instantaneous He eloped with the wife of Harry Fisher from New York and after fleeing to Reno and Pacific coast cities they returned to Salt Lake City The murder was discovered when neighbors entered the apartment and found Mrs De Weese’s body Her features were crushed with an iron In the interim De Weese surrendered to Chicago police and confessed to other burglaries and boasted of being a top diamond thief of the era

Nearly 60 000 held by the license department could be redirected to departmental use next year. Auditor Fred Knapp seeks AG Brewster guidance on fund mixups from the recent statutory changes.
