Washington AP reports Thurgood Marshall, 82, announced his retirement from the Supreme Court saying he is “getting old and coming apart.” He denied anger claims as “a double barreled lie,” reflected on his legacy, and emphasized choosing the best successor regardless of race while noting he will miss the work and plans to rest at home.
Kansas leaders rejected a $197,000 request to stabilize the fire damaged Hoch Auditorium at KU. Gov. Finney and eight other members voted to withhold from the state emergency fund, citing the need to protect reserves. Sen. Bogina dissented, urging KU to use its own maintenance funds.
The government's leading Economic Index rose 0.8 percent in May, marking a fourth straight gain. Eight of eleven components rose, signaling continued expansion six to nine months ahead. White House adviser Boskin said the recession appears over, though some analysts warn of a possible double dip.
KU chancellor Gene Budig will donate the majority of his $7,900 salary increase to support university teaching professorships. His raise drops to 2.4 percent, below the a verage faculty increase planned by the Legislature, while pay hikes for state university chiefs range from 2.2 to 11.4 percent.
