The 2000 Census shows a fivefold rise in same sex partner households across Kansas, with such living arrangements in all 105 counties and urban areas leading the growth. Experts say the increase reflects people acknowledging their partnerships rather than a demographic shift, noting longstanding presence beyond recent visibility.
The 2000 Census counted 209 same-sex households in Lawrence, with 91 male couples and 118 female couples. Wichita, Kansas City Kansas, Topeka, and Overland Park rounded out the top five with 685, 277, 245, and 219 respectively. Experts caution the figures may not reflect Kansas's full gay and lesbian population, estimated at about 2 percent of 2,688,418 Kansans.
