Drought grips Kansas wheat harvest across major counties

Hot dry weather has pushed the harvest north with poor crops spreading from Wichita to Elkhart. Gracia Burnham Reunites With Children After captivity

Gracia Burnham, freed from Abu Sayyaf captivity in the Philippine jungle, enjoys family life with her children Jeff 15 Mindy 12 and Zach 11. She was shot in the thigh during the rescue that killed husband Martin, now uses crutches and a wheelchair. Rabies Shots Given to Eighteen Ellis County Children

Eighteen children from Ellis County began rabies vaccination after exposure to a rabid kitten that fought a skunk around June 7. Health Administrator Butch Schlyer said the kitten, owned by a rural family, deteriorated days after the confrontation and tested positive for rabies at Kansas State University. He ordered $15,000 of vaccine as about 10 families were linked to the exposure.

Preliminary hearing postponed for accused priest in two counties

In Nemaha County the preliminary hearing for Rev. Dennis E. Schmitz, a 41 year old priest charged with one felony count of indecent liberties with a child, was postponed until Monday. In Douglas County a hearing was set for today to decide if there is enough evidence to bind Schmitz over for trial. The cases involve the same alleged victim, dating between 1999. Schmitz faces related allegations connected to a 15 year old. He is co owner of S and S Ranch near Seneca and previously served as vocations director for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas.
