Mine Sweeping Device Adopted By Atlantic Ships
A mine sweeping device is being fitted to several ships in the wartime waters. The bow attached system lowers a netted projection that extends several feet to each side to snag mines and bring them to the surface away from the vessel. The observed vessel has only recently resumed service here since April.

Miss Emma Pine Undergoes Appendicitis Operation
Miss Emma Pine daughter of Z F Pine of Grant township underwent an appendicitis operation at Swedish hospital in Kansas City yesterday morning. The operation was entirely successful and she is getting along nicely though confined to the hospital for a few weeks. She had been ill at home for some time and was only recently taken to the hospital. Harry Albert of Kansas City is visiting Mrs. Wm Albert for a few days.

Recorded Big Quake Heard Across the Ocean
An unusually large earthquake was recorded by the University of Kansas seismograph near midnight. Professor F E Kester estimates the disturbance originated about 6 000 miles away, possibly off southern Italy, with waves detected in Lawrence between 12 02 and 12 31 a m. The needle showed a maximum motion of one third of an inch, indicating a major event.
