In the French Quarter blaze at The Up Stairs Lounge 29 people died in under 20 minutes marking the city’s worst fire in history. Fire officials say most perished from inhalation of super heated gas rather than direct flames as crews removed bodies for hours amid crowds.
Court actions list multiple defendants and penalties including Bruce Stellwagen on daylight hours restriction, Mel Jones fined 25 dollars for disorderly conduct with two days suspended, Lester Trusty 30 days for walking in roadway, Frances Ann Beier fined 15 for letting a dog run at large, Katharyn Eads fined for assault, Frank Williams fined 25 with 15 suspended for dog at large.
About 10 of more than 60 applicants have been selected as final candidates for the Lawrence Memorial Hospital administrator job. Interviews may begin as soon as this weekend with the search committee hospital board and medical staff conducting them. The new administrator will replace Charles Denniston who left for St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield Wis.
A 19 year old Augusta resident, Steven A. Smith, drowned Sunday morning while swimming with three companions in a creek about three miles south of Augusta. Authorities recovered the body about an hour after the drowning.
