Lie detector backs boys in 1948 Buick murder case
A renewed search in Topeka for the 1948 Buick mystery car follows lie detector tests on 16 year olds Russell Viers and Jimmie Johnson. The test supported their latest story of burglarizing a car west of Lawrence on U S Highway 40 before Denning was shot. The two, held on grand larceny charges, previously altered their accounts, and officers note the weapon tests suggest the shot did not come from close range. The vehicle sought is a light over dark green 4 door sedan with a spotlight, possible visor, rear fender skirts, luggage and clothes in back, and the front door unlocked by Denning.

Referendum Has A Slow Start In Douglas County
Douglas County voters began the wheat referendum with a slow start as farmers finished dumping late Friday. Violent thunderstorms stalled harvest for at least two days with 1.60 inches of rain at the Journal-World Building and up to 3.10 inches at Worden. Only a handful of ballots appeared cast early, but officials expected higher later as farmers faced a holiday. Polls opened at 8 am and close at 5 pm with eligibility based on ownership and acreage allotments.
