Old Folks Home First In Ottawa
The Christian Service association home led by Rev. W. T. Smith was shut by city health authorities amid financial woes and poor sanitary conditions. Records show unpaid gas, electricity, water, and coal bills, a $2,150 mortgage, a $145 judgment against Smith, and licenses questioned by the state board. Ottawa officials recalled endorsements after discovering misused copies. Smith cited strong local support but failed to secure official backing as the facility moved from Ottawa to Lawrence amid controversy.
