Houston June 25 AP The Democratic national convention sets a late evening start for Claude G Bowers keynote to capture radio listeners nationwide. After committee ratifications the session will begin around 8 p m to maximize east coast airtime and reach. The focus is on timely platform organization and broad radio dissemination of Bowers speech.
On a special Democratic rail trip to Houston Kansas delegates gather for a 2 p.m. caucus to decide whether to place Kansas as a unit in the presidential nominating race. Chairman Donald Muir of Anthony seeks unanimous consent to adopt the unit rule. The group weighs support for Senator Reed or Governor Smith, while considering other Kansas leaders. An attorney general opinion is sought on ballot eligibility for candidates who amended declarations after filing.
The original manuscript of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, later titled Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, sold with other items for 130000 dollars to a well known American collector who wished to remain anonymous. Dr A B W Rosenbach of Philadelphia announced the sale in Louis Vuitton? No, in Philadelphia. He bought the manuscript in Lucan on April 23. The 77000 dollar sum was reportedly the highest price ever paid for a single book or manuscript at auction in England.

The Detroit of this report notes Boston path to a 9 to 3 win over the Braves led by Del Bissonette who hit his fifteenth homer in the sixth inning. Doug McWeeney allowed seven Braves hits while Brooklyn and Philadelphia games are detailed with doubleheaders and complete games. Washington split a pair with Philadelphia as Braxton and Ornot pitched. American League results include Cleveland over St Louis and Chicago over Detroit with several batteries listed.
In Houston on June 25 the heat pressed Democrats gathered for a reception as temperatures climbed toward record highs. The day saw coats shed and shirtsleeves as a high around 98 degrees was reported with a humid, stifling air. The coolest 24 hour mark stood near 74 degrees before morning.
Rome reports Natale Ceccioni major chief of the dirigible Italia is rescued after the May crash that tore off the gondola. General Umberto Nobile, injured, is aboard the Citta Di Milano at Virgo Bay and plans to lead a search for remaining crew while rescuers seek seven men scattered on the ice.
Sweden reports five men marooned with provisions for two months after Lieutenant E B Lundborg, famed for saving General Umberto Nobile, crashed while attempting a further rescue near Northeast Island. Advices from Spitzbergen say Swedish airmen begin from the vessel Quest to reach Lundborg’s crash site.
Rome reports General Umberto Nobile sustained a fractured shin and back contusion after the Italia airship crash on the polar ice cap. Medical bulletin says incomplete fracture healing with a probable forty day recovery. Also notes dislocation of off foot and torn tendon with abundant hemorrhage.
Washington June 25 AP More than 100 army officers who have been awarded decorations by foreign governments will receive them. Secretary of War Davis has asked Secretary Kellogg to deliver the awards, some held in State Department archives for sixteen years after a repealed act barred accepting foreign honors. Recipients include retired generals Pershing Liggett Bullard Bliss Crowder Edwards Taylor Patrick and active officers Ireland Cheathany Fechet.
A radio message from Brussels via John G. Stutz secretary of the Kansas League of Municipalities announces the Fourth International Congress of Cities will be in Seville Spain from March 19 to 23 next year. The American headquarters for the International Federation of Local Government Associations are in Lawrence under Stutz. The last congress was in Paris in 1926, when American headquarters were placed in Lawrence. Senator Emile Vinek sent the message. An American delegation will probably attend and tour major European cities.
Frequent rains in the past week delayed wheat and oat harvests and slowed cultivation across Kansas. Flooding in southeast counties damaged crops while rain, wind and hail harmed south central yields. One third of the 1928 wheat crop in the southern half is ready, with harvest likely in fall. Barley remains in excellent condition in the northwest. Corn grew only moderately as moisture and weeds hindered fields. pastures and meadows are good and alfalfa second cut looks excellent.
Da venport Iowa residents and Cedar Rapids natives Mr and Mrs James Davenport visited Lawrence last Monday. They toured local gardens and noted Lawrence’s growth since leaving Gedar Rapids. During the trip Mr Davenport recalled his boyhood in Eudora and attended the old stone schoolhouse in the 90s. They planned to return by July 1, with Howard H joining for a longer en route drive back to their Cedar Rapids home.
Miss Maude Elliott and George Elliott of Lawrence and Mrs Marjorie Patterson of Kansas City were slightly injured in an automobile accident near Bloomington Friday night according to word received here. Leavenworth company Giger & Rutherford was awarded the Lawrence paving contract after adjourned session bidding. The low bid of $49,952.10 beat Reed & Wheelock and several others. engineer’s estimate was $60,361.93. Plans include paving Alabama and Kentucky streets, alleys, and parts of North Park, Twentieth and Rhode Island streets. Work to start in about ten days. fire station No. 2 plans approved with bids opened July 9.
Jack Ross, ex KU student and worker at First Baptist church, visits with old friends and stays at Baptist parsonage with Dr Watts. Once stricken with tuberculosis, he spent thirteen months at Leeds Missouri, then moved west to Arizona. His health improved and he now weighs about 70 pounds and looks well. He was a student at the State normal and will soon work for his bachelor’s degree.
Fair weather returned to the wheat belt of Southern Kansas and Northern Oklahoma, easing delays caused by heavy rain. Some fields suffered from poor standing due to rains and wind, while scattered hail damaged others. Officials have not yet provided crop impact estimates. Birds flourished as fields dried, and farmers planned to begin harvest with their combines this week.
The weekly Chamber of Commerce luncheon includes a pre lunch inspection tour of the McNish Bottling Works. It will be the last summer meeting of the group. Earlier trips this season included Edger Steel Seal factory and the city water plant.

Roosevelt who failed at Hyde Park New York will place the New York governor in nomination a function he performed four years ago.
A Missouri Pacific train derailed near Owl Creek, 16 miles west of Iola, injuring 40 passengers, five critically. A broken rail is blamed. 26 were taken to St. Johns Hospital, 14 more rode on. Two Pullman cars overturned. a steel chair car fell 15 to 40 feet into the creek. Heroic actions reported by Dr. Shaffer and nurse Mrs. Ross.
Topeka reports the state canvassers certify nominees for the next August primary. Only contested filing is H Brady for Supreme Court Justice position No 3 on the Republican ticket. Discussion covers term lengths, unexpired terms, and the appointment process.
The AERIAL PLA company formed to manufacture and market the vertical aerial invented by Prof. DINGMOTE at the University faculty was set up at 26 Massachusetts street about a year and a half ago. Two Atchison men, GIG D. ELWELL and FRANK STEIN, own the plant and will continue production at Atchison Sqr a-728 Mass.
Concrete paving on the eleven mile stretch of highway 73 W south of Lawrence progresses with daily pours near 1000 feet. County engineer C G Metz reports a ten hour day with machinery running at capacity, rock and sand supply arriving from nearby sources, and a 38 mile paved highway target under supervision as the project nears completion.
