Teamsters sue city in Douglas County over misconduct claims
Teamsters Local Union No. 696 representing Lawrence solid waste and municipal workers filed a petition in Douglas County District Court alleging city officials obstructed grievance processing, refused good faith discussions on working conditions, and took retaliatory actions against a grievance filer including forced rain painting and 40 hours of training videos. The suit seeks court orders to compel processing of outstanding grievances and cites unsafe instruction to operate front loader trucks.

Lawrence man pleads no contest to low level felony in plea deal
Robert Keith Wright, 57, originally charged with rape and aggravated kidnapping, pleads no contest to a low level felony as part of a plea agreement in which the state will support a dispositional departure to probation. The case involves a Jan 10 incident on North Street in Lawrence and earlier, a court has faced multiple delays due to the unavailable witness and her mental health status. The plea replaces the initial charges with felony aggravated battery and avoids sex offender registration. Wright's attorney notes potential higher sentencing based on criminal history. The state seeks probation rather than prison under the deal.
