Former KU Med worker sentenced for embezzlement scheme
Michael Tae Kim Ahlers, 50, of Lenexa, was sentenced to two years in federal prison for bank fraud and filing a false tax return connected to an embezzlement scheme at University of Kansas Medical Center. He must pay over $680,000 in restitution. Between 2009 and 2015 he deposited department funds into a credit union to evade oversight and cover personal expenses.

Car crashes into house in North Lawrence injuring driver
A 71-year-old man driving a Mercury Mountaineer crashed through foliage and eastward to strike a yellow bungalow at 602 Elm St in North Lawrence just before 9 am. The driver was taken to LMH Health with non life threatening injuries. No occupants were inside the home. Alcohol suspected as contributing factor.

Fire damages mobile home in Lawrence Michigan St area
Lawrence fire crews responded around 10 30 a m to a mobile home fire at 110 Michigan St in a northern Lawrence mobile home park. Firefighters contained the flames to the home, with no injuries reported though the homeowner and others were displaced. The cause is under investigation.

A civil rights group warned Uber Eats that its app profiles exposed transgender drivers to harassment, prompting an apology to Topeka driver Laine Repic and commitments to fix the profile display to avoid using his legal name.
