Rev Dr R W Oliver longtime Kansas University chancellor dies

The Rev Dr R W Oliver rector of St Luke's Kearny Neb and first chancellor of Kansas University died at Episcopal Hospital Philadelphia aged 85. He helped found KU in 1865, served as rector in Lawrence, built the rectory, and stayed in both roles during early KU years before moving to Nebraska. He is remembered for the church’s consecration and KU’s quarter centennial events. The notice also mentions Syrup of Figs advertisement.

Senator Harris Visits Lawrence Amid Broad civic Notes

United States Senator Harris came to Lawrence last night and spent the day in the city. The campout season is starting with several parties planned from Lawrence. The city council will hold a brief special session next Monday night. Decoration for the Turners began today with many flags in the business district. The Fourth of July ads are widespread, and the fireworks list price exceeds $500 though discounts are strong this year. John H. Jeffries and Mary J. Borst of Tonganoxie were married by Justice Sharp. W. H. Pendleton received a carload of Georgia watermelons, Lawrence’s first big shipment. The Journal Company nears completion on republication of Mrs. Governor Robinson’s Kansas history, entering its tenth edition.
