Brownback seeks more Kansas highway patrol troopers
Gov. Sam Brownback urged higher funding for public safety by increasing Kansas Highway Patrol staffing. The agency now has 399 troopers, the lowest since 2005, leaving 21 counties without any troopers and many others with only one or two officers to cover state roads and enforce traffic laws.

Douglas County patrols undersized for population and needs
Adam Winters notes Douglas County has four Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, one in Jefferson County and one in Franklin County. He argues the large KU-based population and proximity to Topeka and Kansas City demand more troopers, while the unit remains low compared with other metros. The patrol is split by troops and zones, with Douglas served by Troop B sharing a zone with Franklin County, complicating local policing. He cites reduced services due to fewer troopers and mentions the pension DROP program proposed for retirement-eligible troopers, a pilot set to end in 2020 unless extended.

The return of dry hot weather in Kansas has jump started the winter wheat harvest. As of Sunday about 8 percent of the crop had been harvested statewide, well below the 33 percent typical for this time. Yields vary, with some fields dry and poor, while others show better-than-expected results. Southeast Kansas has 27 percent harvested, south central 18 percent, central 11 percent, and northwest none, with 51 percent of wheat now mature, below the 65 percent average.
