Downtown Lawrence hotel project faces height clash with historic district
City commissioners weigh an appeal of the Historic Resources Commission decision blocking a TownePlace Marriott extended stay hotel and retail complex on Ninth and New Hampshire. The 121,908 square foot building, 63 feet tall at the corner and 40 feet along the alley, prompts neighbors to hire attorney Ronald Schneider to argue feasible alternatives exist without underground parking. Proponents say the project benefits downtown while planners cited commercial zoning and compatibility concerns.

Chamber of Commerce PAC endorses conservatives draw fire
Kansas Chamber of Commerce political action committee announced endorsements of conservative Republicans in legislative races drawing criticism from the Kansas Democratic Party and a moderate Republican group. Critics say the chamber serves Brownback supporters and push tax cuts amid budget gaps, while supporters cite need for spending restraint. The PAC, which reported 163000 in donations led by Koch Industries, endorsed Anthony Brown in House District 3 for the Senate primary, with a general election rematch against Tom Holland.
