Banks Raise Prime Rate as Major Banks Increase Rates
Banks across the United States lifted the prime rate from 7 percent to 7.34 percent marking the seventh hike this year. Major institutions including Bank of America First National Bank of Chicago and Chase Manhattan Bank joined the move alongside First National City Bank Manufacturers Hanover Trust. The rise targets large corporate loans while consumer mortgage rates and small business loans are expected to stay stable due to government protections.
