Suspect in Four Rapes Scheduled for July 3 Hearing
Samuel F. Burton, 19, of Missouri, faces four rape counts, one attempted rape, and aggravated battery. A preliminary hearing is set for 3 p.m. July 3 in Douglas County Court. Bond remains at 50,000. He was arrested by Lawrence police about 2:30 a.m. Thursday and processed after an amended complaint added four felony counts. The lineup occurred in Topeka due to local volunteer issues. Burton, 6 feet 2 inches tall with a thin build, is held in the county jail.

Friends of Mr and Mrs Peter Cooke have started the Robin E Cooke Memorial Fund to honor their 22 month old daughter who drowned Tuesday evening in an apartment complex pool. Donations may be sent to University State Bank 955 Iowa with funds earmarked for a Kansas University student. Cooke is an assistant professor of biochemistry at KU. The family is staying with the child’s maternal grandfather W A Foster at 73 Cedar Street Rowley Massachusetts during an extended visit.

East Lawrence NDP Meeting Plans For $500000 Funds
East Lawrence residents are invited to a 7 30 p m meeting at East Lawrence Recreation Center to discuss using about 500000 in federal Neighborhood Development Program funds. Don Schaake hopes a Project Action Committee forms from interested citizens to decide on projects such as rehabilitation grants or low interest loans, land for parks, or street and sidewalk upgrades. The current NDP funds aim to support a downtown project this year, with a second 500000 grant pending to create a Kaw River Bridge plaza and improve Sixth and Massachusetts.

County budget deadline set for August 5
Douglas County Budget Director Darlene Hill reminded agencies that their 1973 budgets must be published before August. Budgets for the county, townships, drainages, cemetery districts, cities and school districts require publication and a public hearing prior to submission to the county clerk. The clerk's office deadline is August 25 and hearings must follow within 10 days after publication.
