Stevenson finds discontent rising in South America

U N Ambassador Adlai Stevenson reported to President Kennedy that discontent and economic decline grew across 10 South American capitals during his 18 day tour. He noted universal call for social reforms and broad support for the alliance for progress despite unpopularity of the Cuban invasion among Latin nations. He called the trip successful with strong welcomes everywhere.

Lawrence Construction to Build Dillon Plaza Additions

The Lawrence Construction Co led by Frank Raley wins the Dillon Plaza contract in the 1800 block of Massa chusetts. Construction will start soon on two new store locations including a Raney Drug Store with a 5 000 square foot site and a 4 500 square foot unit. The project costs about 60 000 dollars and should finish by September. The new complex will yield 28 000 square feet and mirror the supermarket building in design.

Mrs Anna Averill 83 Dies in Wellsville Iowa

Mrs Anna Averill age 83 of Wellsville died Thursday night at an Iowa hospital after living two years in an Ottawa rest home. Funeral services 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Coughlin Chapel Wellsville with burial in Wellsville Cemetery. Survivors include daughter Mrs Loree Settles of Prairie Village and two sons Donald and Maurice Averill of Wellsville, plus sister Mrs Hattie Kambdin of Overland Park.

Police Car Hit On Kaw Bridge

Police Lt. Elmer Martin, 58, and two others were injured in a two car crash at the Kaw River Bridge. Martin treated and to return for more X rays. Jake Hayes 67 and Leo Banks 28 also injured. Rayford pleaded guilty in police court to DUI left of center and open bottle. sentenced to 30 days and $150 fine. Hayes fined $35 and Banks $25. Damages estimated at $550 to the police car and $900 to Rayford’s car. Rayford was northbound when he struck the stopped police vehicle.

Pole Hit by Wrecker West of Lawrence

A Kansas Power and Light utility pole was knocked down about 7 p.m. Thursday when a wrecker driven by Kenneth Church 35 of Route 2 Richland struck it. Church was uninjured. The crash occurred a mile south of Lawrence on U S 59. Wrecker damage was estimated at 200 dollars. Trooper Dick Krasnicka said Church lost control of the wrecker but the cause remained unclear.

KU summer session fees due as 2700 students pay

Nearly all of the 2,700 Kansas University students attend the summer session and pay their fees today. A Saturday morning deadline is set for those unable to pay.
