Senator Hatch plans new legislation to bar all federal and state officers from political activity, extending current civil service rules. Mitchells to Sail From Vancouver for Sumatra

Mr and Mrs R C Mitchell will sail from Vancouver to Palembang Sumatra NEI within two months to reside four years. He joins the Nederlandsche Koloniale Petroleum Maatschappij Geology Dept in Soengei Gerong near Palembang to head core drilling on Borneo Java Sumatra. The Mitchell home is leased to Mr and Mrs Farr Black northwest of Baldwin during their Orient stay. Mitchell had earlier worked eight years in Sumatra for the same company and later served Kansas in pollution prevention before resigning after three years.

Hybrid Wheat Sets 56.2 Bushels Per Acre At Woodward

In Woodward Oklahoma on June 23 a hybrid wheat from the U S experiment station yielded 56.2 bushels per acre on plots near town. Superintendent F F Chilcott says the cross between Kawvale and Tenmarq produced a stiff stalk able to withstand wind and rain after five years of experiments. the hybrid remains unnamed.

Hague's Counsel Offers No Defense to Charges

In Newark New Jersey on June 23 Mayor Frank Hague's counsel said they would offer no defense to charges by the CIO and ACLU that he and other city officials violated free speech and assembly in Jersey City. All Germans Will Be Liable for Temporary State Labor Service

Berlin reports that from July 1 all German men and women will be liable for temporary state labor service. Occupations will be assigned and duties undertaken under government contract with pay lower than usual. A New Elevator Nears Opening in Lawrence

H E Stoneback builds a new grain elevator at India station on East Twenty third street. R J Wager will manage the plant with 10 000 bushel capacity. Stoneback, a 600 acre wheat farmer, supplied most lumber from his own logs and local labor helped. the site sits just north of the viaduct on Highway 10 over the Santa Fe tracks.

In Los Angeles a former South Dakota farmer, Arthur Emil Hansen, shot two lawyers in the hall of records court. He told deputies he had “nothing to lose” and was jailed without bail. State Tax Commission to Convene on Equalization

Topeka June 23 GCPI W G Fink chairman said today the state tax commission will convene July 13 as a state board of equalization and remain in session until the equalization work for 1988 is completed. The board will begin July 1 hearing appeals from county boards and representatives of the counties on matters of equalization. Hearings continue by schedule until July 26 with fixed dates for counties. Notices have been sent to all county clerks with instructions for appeals preparation.

Cutoff Work Underway To Replace Mud Creek Curve

List and Clark Construction of Kansas City started the cutoff for highway 40 northeast of Lawrence. Crews moved 20 000 yards of dirt to form a road dump across Mud Creek while test pilings go in for a bridge. About 40 men are employed on the project.

Roosevelt Works Long Hours on Unsigned Bills

Hyde Park, June 2. President Roosevelt arranged long work hours on unsigned bills before leaving for Washington. He will reach the White House tomorrow and broadcast from the diplomatic room. He signed 21 more bills and vetoed three last night, total 78 signed and 11 vetoed since Monday, with about 230 still awaiting action.
