TV ratings dip for NBA Finals pacing and figures
Ratings for Fridays Spurs versus Knicks sank to a 9.6 rating and 19 share, the lowest prime time NBA Finals figure since 1978. NBC's two games averaged 10.6/20, down 39 percent from last year. Factors cited include Jordan's absence, sloppy play, noncompetitive games, and San Antonio's small market. Camby started in Game 3 for Dudley. Stern fined Johnson and another Knick for a profanity laced tirade during a mandatory media session.

The narrative emphasizes unlikely career path and key mentor moments that shaped a Hall of Fame figure.
