Reports from Herrin Illinois describe a brutal clash as striking miners and company workers fight near a strip mine. By noon twenty six dead and over thirty feared as bodies scatter across a fifteen mile area. Victims are shown shot beaten and some hanged from trees. Witnesses recall a water plea met with laughter as violence escalates.
In Herrin Illinois in June, thousands of men gathered as non union workers were killed. At 9 am the forty four prisoners were driven to a forest edge near the mine by an angry mob and slain after a pre arranged signal. Strikers say the prisoners fled to escape and were pursued and killed.
Reported clashes at a strip mine near Marion involve strikers surrounding the camp and capturing workers. Six attackers were later captured and driven toward the mine area as a fight left several dead and wounded, while miners deny any killings occurred.
An Associated Press reporter, after ten unsuccessful attempts, persuaded a taxi driver to reach the scene of a fight at a fired strip mine. Miners looted food cars, camp occupants were searched and some were marched into the woods, with reports of lynching and widespread armed presence in the area. Forty six prisoners were said to be en route but not yet arrived hours after the report.
Springfield and nearby cities report tension as Adjutant General Black orders Colonel Hunter to investigate claims of nineteen or more miners killed in Herrin. Officials dispute casualty figures while union leaders deny responsibility and cabinet members discuss the crisis with no action decided. Funeral of Nashville Editor Yancey noted.

Striker faces five charges including deserting wife and minor child and running off with mortgaged property. Two other check cases set for tomorrow before Justice Clark. mortgage charge to be heard before Justice Manley upon his return from California. Evidence showed a April 7 worthless check and no funds at Farm State bank of Eudora.
James A Neighbor of Haskell avenue reports severe poultry losses in the last fifteen days with about three hundred chickens dead. An interurban area to the east echoes similar trouble. Neighbor sought diagnosis and help from State Agricultural College experts as the flock drooped then convulsed before death.
Topeka June 22 weather bulletin notes no rain in sight with a continued dry spell. State meteorologist S. D. Flora reports yesterday's Topeka high near 98 degrees and little expectation of relief today. Hanover recorded the state's highest temperature.
The Journal-World players opened their first practice last night and, despite eyeing the ball well, fell 5 to 1 to the Haskell Indians. Another practice was set for this evening at Stadiumfeld.
The U S customs office moves to regulate motor boats on the Kaw above the Lawrence dam. Boaters must carry lights from sunset to sunrise, whistles, life preservers, extinguishers, and obtain numbers from customs. Noncompliance may trigger penalties or seizure. Washington June 22 President Harding told members of the Philippines parliamentary commission he could not yet urge Congress to back independence. He indicated he was not unalterably opposed to autonomy but viewed it as a question of time. The visiting mission received the reply to its petition presented last Friday.
