At Stonehenge before dawn Floyd Patterson's knockout bid loomed as 15 white clad Druids welcomed summer. Police watched as youths and celebrations continued on Salisbury Plain with radios broadcasting the Patterson Johansson match.
Frank Sullivan, state insurance commissioner from Lawrence, explained the functions of his office to members of the local Lions Club during a Monday night gathering at the Country Club.
Mrs George Hoxie dies in Chico California widow of Dr George Hoxie former dean of Kansas University Medical School. Mrs Mary Parnell 88 of Perry dies at McLouth rest home born near Perry and lifelong Jefferson County resident with funeral at Perry Christian Church and burial at Baster Cemetery. Survivors include daughter Cecile Colby Leawood son Lloyd Parnell Williams town sisters Vertle Woodson Annie Welter Sadie Whitley and brother Jessie Michael.
Mrs. Lillian W Penfold 87 died this morning at her home on Elm Street. Rumsey Funeral Home conducted services with Rev Morris Biggers in charge. Burial is at Hubbell Hill Cemetery in Tonganoxie. Survivors include two daughters Lois Ward and Edna Roberts, three sons Landis, Francis, and Claude Penfold, a sister Estella Robb, two brothers J E Leighty and W J Leighty, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Robert Ellsworth Republican candidate for Kansas Second District met with State Rep. Odd Williams and six Kansans in the Soviet Union. The group visited Moscow Kiev Leningrad Prague Zurich Paris New York and Washington. Ellsworth noted Russian fondness for the U.S. and discussed Khrushchev pressures and peaceful coexistence.
Vinland High School will auction its 20 by 40 foot shop building at 1 p.m. July 20 with a Sept. 1 move requirement. District 88 voted to close the high school this term but will retain the building for grade school use.
Lawrence fishermen report six days on Basswood Lake in Minnesota with daily limit catches of walleyes. The party led by Dr H Penfield Jones and including Rusty Springer Alan Woolard Junius Underwood Bob Van Noy Ernest Pillian Glenn Pierce Russ Schon Tom Parker and Harry Nevin enjoyed ideal weather aside from swarms of mosquitos. Parker injured his collarbone in a fall on the houseboat but recovered and returned to Lawrence after a Detroit trip.
Democratic Senate candidate Frank Theis accused Republican Sen. Schoeppen of election-year deception in McPherson. Theis cited a 1956 vote against a bill to remove the penalty for working, noting it would have let Social Security beneficiaries earn up to 50 dollars a month without benefit deductions.
Memorial fund honoring the late Carl G. Smith of Mission established by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. members in Kansas. Dr. Wayne O. Wallace of Atchison Kaw Valley Heart Assn. president announced gifts will support research toward prevention and control of heart disease.
Italian Delegate Gaetano Martino urged the Geneva conference to form committees to study safeguards and an veto-free international police force. He argued police must be international, warned Soviet plans could require UN Charter revisions, as tensions rose with Romanian Deputy Eduard Mezincescu blaming Western powers for distrust and citing U2 incidents.
The Lawrence National Guard Combat Support Company 2nd Battalion 137th Infantry under Capt. Karl Reber plans a July 22 convoy to Camp Ripley Minnesota for a two week summer camp. About 100 officers and men trained at Ft. Riley then prepared equipment for combat use while moving artillery vehicles and light guns. The unit, well regarded in the organization, will join convoys from Leavenworth Atchison Kansas City Holton and St. Marys departing before July 22 with a four man advance group two days earlier. Chief Warrant Officer Don Ousdahl said paperwork remains but the group is in good shape for the annual drill.
Margarita G. Smith of New York, former fiction editor at Mademoiselle for 15 years, will discuss What Reading Means to Me at KU Writers Conference. The session is 8 p.m. in Gertrude Sellards Pearson dormitory during the four day event opening with Charles Pearson and Frances Grinstead. The KU journalism school and KU Extension sponsor the conference.
A natural gas explosion in Haven Kansas demolished two buildings and damaged two others injuring seven people. The blast collapsed Haven Journal and Engweiler Hardware, sent debris across Main Street, and damaged a service station and nearby barn. Injured included publisher Neil Burrow his son Gary and lion type operator Merlin Davis.

Planning Commission recommended two D-1 zoning changes for professional buildings. Maupintour Associates at 1236 Mass. St. and Dr. Richard Nelson's West Eighth Street lot were approved for City Commission action, with parking and site conditions noted. Five students from Lawrence High School plus peers from 18 states and 37 Kansas counties participate in a KU run Artpart of the Art and Music Camp program. The camp features 20 fields of science and math, field trips, lectures, and a graduate research program with 25 alumni. Dr. Robert W Baxter directs with guest lecturer Dr Barry Commoner delivering two talks. The National Science Foundation funds the project and provides need-based grants.
