Lack of mental health care hits Kansas foster kids hard
Kansas foster youths face a mental health crisis amid provider shortages and high caseloads. Saint Francis Ministries reports up to 80 percent of children in foster care have mental or behavioral health issues, far above the 18 to 22 percent in the general population. Saint Francis and KVC Health Systems are the state’s largest foster care contractors, with caseloads at Saint Francis reaching about 50 cases per worker and roughly 30 families per clinician at KVC. The autism waiver serves about 65 individuals with 400 on the waiting list, amid limited Medicaid expansion and bed capacity.
