Reptile rescuer scales legal barriers in New York shop
Robert Shapiro runs Social Tees and New York City's unofficial reptile orphanage from a tiny East Village storefront. He houses from a dozen to 100 reptiles, including Burmese pythons and iguanas, often accepting pets owners cannot care for while navigating bans on keeping many species. He partners with sanctuaries and zoos to rehome illegal or abandoned reptiles and recalls cases from an alligator found in Staten Island to a turtle rescued in Chinatown.
