The Labor Department reports a 0.4 percent May CPI rise, down from April's 0.6 percent, with the 12 month inflation at 9.5 percent. Beef up 7.6 percent, eggs and sugar drop, nonfood goods up 0.2 percent, services up 0.2 percent, pay real spendable earnings up 4.4 percent due to May tax cuts.
The House cleared a broad energy bill despite dropping a gasoline tax hike and shifting to a non tax approach to fuel economy. It now awaits Senate action with hearings not expected before mid July. The measure passes 291 to 130 with party lines in Kansas delegation.
Eleven bids were submitted for the Sunflower nitroguanidine plant near Lawrence Nebraska. Hensel Phelps Construction Co of Greeley Colorado appears to top the field by about 2 million. Award hinges on error checks and army clearance.
Sam Giancana a reputed Chicago crime syndicate leader was found shot to death in his Oak Park home. Police chief Wilbur Reichert said Giancana, 65, was shot once in the mouth and five times in the neck. six .22 shell casings were found and about $1400 in cash on the body. Police doubt robbery as a motive.
The National Weather Service expects a hot weekend start with temperatures near 90 on Saturday under partly cloudy skies. Sunrise at 5 54 a m and sunset at 8 49 p m give 14 hours 55 minutes of daylight, with a low in the low 70s and a slim chance of isolated storms before morning.
The railway clerks union agreed to delay a nationwide walkout until July 21 after an all-night round of talks led by W J Usery Jr. No further negotiations were planned. The union had threatened to strike at 12:01 a.m. CDT Monday if a settlement failed.
Wheat harvesting is starting in Douglas County with yields of 35 40 bushels per acre reported by Farmers Co op Assn in Lawrence. Moisture levels range 16 17 percent with discounts for grain above 13 5 percent. Delays due to rain and muddy fields may push work to early next week as weather remains unsettled.
The President Ford Committee is registered with the FEC and authorized to raise funds for Ford s bid for a four year term in 1976. Dean Burch registered the committee as its head and David Packard serves as treasurer and finance chairman. Howard Callaway named to manage the 1976 campaign.
The Kansas River dam at Lawrence has long supplied water and power to the city but maintenance is controlled by Kansas Fibreboard Inc. under a perpetual lease to Bowersock. The dam, historically rebuilt after floods in 1903 and 1951, now yields only a small share of regional power, while the city relies on the main plant at the Lawrence Energy Center.
